Meilerhütte

The Meilerhütte sits at 2366m on the eastern flank of the Wetterstein range, between Zugspitze and Alpspitze. Reach it from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via the Höllental gorge trail, a steep approach of 4.5 to 5 hours from the town. This is serious hiking—the path climbs 1400m and sees rockfall hazard in wet conditions. Alternatively approach from Mittenwald over the Schachen or from the Eibsee, adding another hour. Winter access is unreliable; the hut closes November through May.
The hut holds 70 beds across dormitories and a few doubles. The DAV Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen operates it as a working mountain shelter, not a leisure destination. Meals are available—order dinner when you book. There are no showers, so expect mountain standards. Water comes from snowmelt. The hut serves climbers on the nearby Zugspitze north face and hikers traversing the Wetterstein crest toward Mittenwald or Schachen.
Book directly by phone with the Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Summer Saturdays and school holidays (especially July and August) fill 2-3 months ahead. Weekdays in June and September are more flexible. The hut operates with limited staff, so call during afternoon hours rather than early morning. Bring cash for payment; card facilities are unreliable at this elevation. Half board is standard and cost-effective.
