Baita Menecon

Baita Menecon sits at 898m in the Carnic Alps of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the Val Pesarina. The hut works as a base for ridge walks along the Carnic crest and approaches to peaks like Cima dei Diei (2,322m). From Pesariis village, the walk in takes 2–2.5 hours through mixed forest on a steady trail. The location sits high enough to catch cooler air on summer afternoons but low enough that snow rarely blocks access before June.

The hut offers 30 beds split across simple dormitory rooms. Half-board is standard: expect hearty valley cooking—pasta, polenta, local cheeses—rather than haute cuisine. Water comes from the spring; there is no shower. The season runs from late May through September; call ahead in shoulder months. The hut operates as a staffed refuge, so meals are reliable and portions generous. Cell signal is patchy but usually adequate at the entrance.

Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; they do not use online booking systems. Outside summer, aim for 2 weeks notice. Expect to pay cash or bring a card reader. The hut suits walkers seeking refuge-to-refuge itineraries in the Carnics without committing to bigger mountain huts further east.
