About

Bivacco Molassa sits at 699m on the eastern edge of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Alps, in the Julian Prealps. Reach it from Monrupino (near Trieste) via a steep 2.5-hour hike through mixed forest and limestone terrain. The trail gains 600m steadily and requires decent fitness. You can also approach from the Carso plateau if you know the area. This is low-altitude Alpine country—autumn and spring conditions matter more than you might expect.

This is a basic emergency bivouac, not a staffed rifugio. It offers simple shelter with sleeping platforms for 8–10 people and no services: bring your own food, water, and sleeping bag. There's no warden, no meals, no gas stoves. The structure is solid and weatherproof, making it reliable for unexpected descent or winter mountaineering training. Open year-round.

This is a self-service hut. Do not expect anyone to be present. Arrive with a headtorch if you're uncertain of daylight. Carry water—there's none on-site. Register in the logbook when you arrive. Check cai.it or contact the Monrupino SAC section directly for current condition reports, especially after winter or heavy rain. The approach trail can be muddy and slick; waterproof boots matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't—it's an unstaffed emergency bivacco with open access. Check conditions and leave no trace; register your visit with CAI Trieste if planning a longer stay in the area.
Year-round as an emergency shelter, but autumn and spring offer the most stable conditions at this low elevation; summer heat and winter wet limestone make other seasons less pleasant.
Start from Monrupino (near Trieste) and climb 2.5 hours uphill through mixed forest and limestone, gaining 600m steadily; a marked trail exists but route-finding skills help.
As a basic bivacco, expect a shelter with a roof and walls only—no bedding, water, food, or heating; bring everything you need.
No—the 2.5-hour steep ascent, exposed limestone terrain, and lack of facilities make it only suitable for fit hikers and mountaineers comfortable with basic bivouac conditions.
