Refuge Divisione Julia

Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy
About
Rifugio Divisione Julia sits at 1,840m on the Montasch plateau in the Julian Alps, deep in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region near the Slovenian border. Reach it from Predil Pass (1,156m) via a 4-hour hike northeast through high meadows and limestone terrain. The route is well-marked but exposed to weather—come prepared. Most hikers approach from the Resia Valley or via the village of Tarcento to the south.
The refuge holds 55 beds across simple rooms. Meals focus on regional Friuli cooking: hearty pastas and local cheeses. The hut has a small bar and provides heating in cooler months. There is no electricity generator, so lights run on solar power and battery backup. Water comes from a spring. The hut opens mid-May through October, depending on snow melt and winter damage. Winter ascents are possible only with mountaineering experience and prior coordination.
Book direct through CAI's online system at cai.it or rifugi.net. July and August fill fast—reserve 2–3 months ahead for summer weekends. The hut sits on a popular east-west trekking route across the Julian Alps, so shoulder seasons (June and September) offer quieter conditions and more reliable availability. Contact the guardian directly if planning visits outside the standard season.
