Refuge Monte Ragola

Rifugio Monte Ragola sits at 1,752m in the Ligurian Apennines, roughly 2.5 hours' walk from the village of Santo Stefano d'Aveto. The approach follows marked trails through beech forest, gaining 650m steadily without technical difficulty. Summer access is straightforward; winter snow can block the route for weeks.

The rifugio is a working mountain hut with 30 beds split across basic shared rooms. Half-board is standard: expect simple but filling food—pasta, polenta, local cheeses, cured meats—cooked daily. The kitchen serves meals at set times; packed lunches are available if you're leaving early. Toilet facilities are basic but clean. There is no hot shower. The hut runs year-round, though confirm availability before December and March visits, as staffing can be irregular.

Book direct by email or phone at least one week ahead, especially July and August weekends. The hut is popular with families and weekend hikers from coastal Liguria, so expect crowds on Saturdays and Sundays during summer. Mid-week slots are easier to secure. Payment is in cash or bank transfer; confirm what methods are accepted when you call. The refuge keeper speaks limited English, so basic Italian phrases help, though persistence works.
