About

Capanna Alpe di Nimi sits at 1,718m on the Alpe di Nimi plateau in Lombardy's Orobie Alps. Reach it from the village of Piazza Brembana (900m) via a 4-hour hike up steep forest trails that gain 800m. The path is well-marked but relentless. Most parties arrive mid-afternoon and leave the following morning. Alternative approach from Val Seriana takes 5–6 hours.

The rifugio has 15 beds split across simple dormitory rooms. Meals are basic but filling—expect polenta, risotto, and locally sourced cheese. Water comes from a mountain spring. There are no showers. The hut operates year-round but gets snowbound in winter; contact ahead if visiting November to April. Electricity is generator-powered and limited.

Book directly with the guardian by phone well in advance—this is a small, remote operation with no online booking system. July and August weekends fill fast. Summer weather window is June through September. The hut works as a base for ridge traverses across the Orobie or as a waypoint on longer hut-to-hut routes. Bring your own sleeping bag and expect spartan conditions; this is working refuge, not a lodge.

Frequently Asked Questions

15 beds in basic dormitory rooms, with simple meals (polenta, risotto, local dishes) included; showers are likely cold water, typical for high Alpine huts at this elevation.
Not ideal for beginners—the 4-hour ascent with 800m gain is steep and relentless. Fit families with hiking experience can manage it; very young children will struggle on the approach.
