Cabin Cristallina

Capanna Cristallina sits at 2,575m in the high Lombardy Alps, reached via the Gries Valley approach from Riale. The hut lies on the main ridge traverse between Monte Rosa and the Gotthard massif. Most hikers arrive in 4–5 hours from the valley, though fit parties can make it in 3.5 hours. The final approach is steep scree and rocky terrain; crampons are needed in early season.

The hut holds 120 beds across multiple dormitories and a few private rooms. Half-board and full-board meals are standard; the kitchen focuses on hearty mountain food that fuels high-altitude work. A self-catering kitchen is available if you bring your own supplies. Water runs from a reliable mountain spring. The hut opens mid-June through September, with the busiest weeks in July and August. Toilets are outside; expect basic but functional conditions at this altitude.

Book direct by email or phone at least two months ahead for July and August. June and September are quieter but bring more variable weather. Phone connection is unreliable—email is more reliable. The hut sits on the CAI network; CAI members get small discounts. Arrival time is typically 4pm; notify the hut if you'll be late. Pack a headtorch for the final approach in poor light.
