Refuge Alberto Grassi

Rifugio Alberto Grassi sits at 1,987m in the Bergamasque Alps on the border between Lombardy and Veneto. The hut sits on the Sentiero delle Orobie, a high-altitude traverse that links major rifugios across the range. From Roncobello (900m), the approach takes 4 hours of steep forest hiking to reach the hut. In summer, you can also approach from the east via Rifugio Branczi.

The rifugio runs as a simple mountain shelter with 40 beds spread across dormitories. Meals are available daily: expect hearty pasta, polenta, and local cheeses. The hut has running water and basic toilets. It opens late May through September, closing during heavy snow or poor weather. The surrounding terrain suits day hikes to high passes and ridge walks, though this is serious alpine country—bring a map and compass. Afternoon thunderstorms are common; leave early.

Email the hut directly to reserve beds. Phone ahead if you're arriving without booking—space fills quickly on weekends and during school holidays. July and August require booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance. June, September and early October offer more flexibility. The hut staff speak Italian and basic English.
