Refuge Alpe Spluga

Rifugio Alpe Spluga sits at 1,838m in the Spluga Valley, a quiet corner of eastern Lombardy between Lake Como and the Swiss border. Reach it from Campodolcino in 2.5 hours on a well-marked path through alpine meadows and larch forest. The trail climbs steadily but never steeply—it's accessible to anyone with moderate fitness. The hut works as a base for day hikes across the Spluga watershed or as a stop on longer valley traverses toward Chiavenna.

The rifugio holds 28 beds in shared dormitories. Meals are available: simple, hearty fare typical of mountain huts. There's a small bar and basic facilities including a shower (bring coins). The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and you should call ahead. The location makes it popular with hikers exploring the Orobie ridges and those crossing between the Spluga and Mera valleys.

Phone ahead to book, especially July and August. The hut can fill on weekends during summer. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a good night's sleep before moving on. Staff speak Italian and some English. The nearest resupply is Campodolcino, so bring any special dietary supplies with you.
