Refuge Canto Alto

Rifugio Canto Alto sits at 1,030m in the Val Brembana, a valley that cuts deep into Lombardy's Orobian Alps. It's accessible via a straightforward 2-hour hike from the village of Carona or by car to the road-end parking (shorter approach). The refuge sits on established hiking routes linking the lower Orobian valleys—useful if you're connecting multiple days of walking rather than targeting high altitude.

The rifugio operates as a working mountain restaurant with 30 beds split across shared rooms. The kitchen serves traditional Lombard mountain food: casunzei (local filled pasta), polenta, and grilled meats. There's hot water, basic shower facilities, and a wood stove in the common area. The hut stays open year-round except for brief closures in November and during heavy winter weather. It's CAI-affiliated, so members get discounts on accommodation.

Book directly by phone (number on cai.it or rifugio websites). July and August weekends fill predictably—call at least 2 weeks ahead. Outside summer, a phone call a few days before is usually enough. The hut prefers groups to contact them early. It's not a destination for alpinists or demanding technical routes; it serves walkers working the valley's network of trails and anyone needing a comfortable base under 1,100m.
