Refuge Gremei

Rifugio Gremei sits at 1,555m in the Prealps of Lombardy, on the edge of the Paesaggistica dei Corni di Canzo nature reserve. Reach it from Canzo village (45 minutes by car from Como) via a hiking trail that takes 2 hours from the valley floor. The approach is steady, through mixed forest with views opening toward the Como basin as you climb. This is day-hike terrain for most visitors, but the hut works as a base for exploring the ridge network above Canzo and the Orobie foothills to the north.

The rifugio is a simple working operation. It has drinking water and flush toilets. Meals are available but expect basic mountain fare rather than fine dining. Capacity is modest—plan to share space with other hikers. The season runs roughly May through October, with weekends busier than weekdays even in shoulder months. This hut attracts walkers on half-day and full-day loops rather than serious mountaineers.

Book by phone directly with the hut. Call ahead especially for weekends and summer months (July–August), when it fills quickly with families and local hiking groups. Weekday visits in May, June, and September offer quieter conditions and easier walk-in access. The hut is closed November through April.
