About

Rifugio Marco e Rosa sits at 3597m on the north ridge of Gran Sasso, in the heart of the Lombardy high Alpine. Reach it from Piazza San Pietro in Sondrio via the Val di Mello approach. The walk in takes 4–5 hours from the road head at Bagni di Masino. The final 500m climbs steeply over scree and rock. Most climbers split this into two days, using lower huts or bivouacs. Direct ascents from the valley are possible but committing.

The rifugio has 48 beds across mixed dorms and some smaller rooms. Meals are served daily—expect hearty Alpine fare cooked on site. Water comes from snowmelt and mountain springs. The hut runs year-round but is fully staffed and provisioned only June to September. Winter visits are possible by arrangement with the guardian. Toilet facilities are basic but functional; the hut has no shower.

This is a popular base for climbers on the Gran Sasso traverse and for approaches to surrounding peaks. Book directly with the CAI sezione Valtellinese. Phone ahead even with a confirmed booking—mountain weather and access can change fast. July and August are crowded; expect 2–3 week waits unless you book 8 weeks in advance. May, June, and September offer quieter conditions and good weather odds.
