About
Rifugio Pèu sits at 1,725m on the south side of the Orobie range in Lombardy. Approach from the Ponte della Selva trailhead near Schilpario: the route climbs 800m over 3–4 hours through forest and alpine meadow. The hut marks the start of ridge traverses toward Pizzo Camino (2,460m) and access to the Orobie's limestone peaks. Winter snow closes the access road; summer is when this hut sees traffic.
This is a small rifugio with 6 beds across basic dormitory spaces. Half-board is standard (dinner, breakfast, packed lunch available). The guardian maintains a wood stove, rainwater tank, and basic toilet. No shower. Meals are simple and hearty—pasta, soup, local cheese. The hut opens June through September, weather dependent. Check ahead before visiting outside peak season.
Book direct with the guardian through CAI's rifugium database (rifugium.cai.it) or call ahead to confirm staffing. July and August weekends fill weeks in advance. May to early June and September offer quieter access to the same routes. The hut has no power and no mobile signal—arrive with a charged headtorch and realistic expectations for a working mountain shelter, not a hotel.
