About

Bivacco Alpe Cavegna sits at 2,038m on the Alpe Cavegna plateau in the Vigezzo Valley, in the Pennine Alps. Reach it from Santa Maria Maggiore via the hamlet of Caiparede; allow 2.5–3 hours hiking. The route climbs steadily through meadow and larch forest to the broad, exposed plateau. This is a mountain bivouac—a basic shelter with roof and walls, no warden, no services. Come equipped with your own sleeping bag and mat.

The shelter holds roughly 8–10 people on wooden platforms. There is drinking water from a spring nearby. Cooking and heating are not available; bring a stove if you plan to cook. The bivouac stays accessible year-round, though snow in winter and spring may make the approach difficult. Most users are alpinists heading for routes on the surrounding peaks, or hikers traversing the plateau.

This is a self-service refuge run by CAI Vigezzo. There is no booking system and no warden present. Arrive early in summer weekends if you want space. Check conditions with CAI Vigezzo before heading up in winter or after heavy snow. Bring water purification tablets as backup.
