About

Cabane Bella-Tola sits at 2,346m on the ridge between the Mattertal and Turtmanntal valleys in Valais, just across the Swiss border from Piedmont. Reach it from Gruben in 4–5 hours via the Augstbord pass, or from St. Niklaus via the Täsch Alp in 5–6 hours. The hut marks the midpoint on the Haute Route and serves as a base for traverses across the Bella-Tola massif.

The hut is small and spartan. It has 15 beds in basic dormitory rooms and provides hearty meals (half-board available). Water comes from snowmelt. There is no electricity or heating beyond a wood stove. The season runs from mid-June through September, depending on snow conditions. The hut is run by the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club), though it sits within striking distance of Italian routes and attracts plenty of transnational traffic.

Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August, especially if you need a guaranteed bed. Phone ahead to confirm availability and meal options. You can also register with the Swiss hut network through the SAC website. Outside peak season, dropping in is usually possible, but call first—winter storms and early snow can shut access quickly.
