Cabane de Jaman

Cabane de Jaman sits at 2,002m in the Cottian Alps above the Val Varaita in Piedmont. Reach it from Casteldelfino by hiking up the Varaita river valley; the ascent takes 4–5 hours depending on snow cover. The hut serves as a junction point for traverses toward Monte Viso and routes into the Queyras region of France. Most approaches are straightforward trail hiking rather than scrambling, though the high alpine terrain means weather changes fast.

The hut has capacity for around 40 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain food—pasta, polenta, soups, local cheese. Water comes from snowmelt and mountain streams; toilets are basic. The hut operates from June through September, depending on snow conditions. July and August bring steady foot traffic from hikers doing the Monte Viso circuit and cross-border routes.

June and September are quieter and often have availability on shorter notice. Check current conditions before arriving in early season—the path can be waterlogged or snow-covered well into June.
