About
Lohnerhütte SAC sits at 2,171m in the high Piedmont valleys. Reach it from the Aosta Valley side via the Gran Paradiso massif—most parties approach from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,732m) or from lower starting points in the Val di Rhêmes. Plan 4–5 hours from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II. The hut works as a base for traversing the Gran Paradiso ridge system or pushing toward higher peaks in the range.
The hut sleeps 18 in mixed dormitory rooms. Water is available from the mountain spring. There is no kitchen facility for self-catering, so you eat what the guardian prepares—typically simple mountain food. Open July through September, weather permitting. Toilet facilities are basic mountain standard. The hut is small and exposed; wind and cold arrive fast even in summer.
Contact the hut by email to book. Midsummer (mid-July to mid-August) fills quickly, especially weekends—book 8–12 weeks ahead for these dates. June and September have more availability. Confirm opening dates before travelling, as snow and storms close access without warning. The SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) manages this hut; you do not need club membership to stay, but expect higher rates if you are not a member of SAC, CAI, or affiliated Alpine clubs.

Open roughly June through September, depending on snow conditions; check with CAI or the hut directly before visiting in early June or late September, as staffing varies by year.
Most parties approach from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,732m) in 4–5 hours; alternatively, start from lower points in Val di Rhêmes for a longer day or overnight approach. The route traverses the Gran Paradiso massif.
18 beds in mixed dormitories, mountain spring water, and basic meals; expect no showers—bring a washcloth and dry quickly at altitude.
Not ideal for beginners: the approach requires solid mountain fitness and scrambling ability on exposed terrain. Families with strong hikers aged 12+ and Alpine experience can manage it as a two-day trip.
