About
Rifugio Gialorgues sits at 2275m in the Cottian Alps, deep in the upper Varaita Valley south of Saluzzo. Approach from the village of Chianale—a 4-hour hike gains 800m through alpine meadows and scree to reach the hut. The terrain is exposed and rocky; good boots and navigation skills are essential. Most parties reach the hut late afternoon. Winter access is only possible with crampons and experience.
The rifugio is small, holding 12 beds across four rooms. The guardian serves dinner and breakfast using local ingredients; notify ahead if you have dietary needs. There's no shower, limited water (melted snow in summer), and a wood stove for warmth. The hut operates June to September reliably, though shoulder months depend on snow conditions and the guardian's schedule. This is a working mountaineer's base, not a hotel—expect basic comfort and early bedtimes.
Book directly by phone or email with the guardian well in advance, especially for July and August weekends. July and August fill fastest. The Varaita Valley sees fewer visitors than adjacent valleys, but summer weekends still require 2–3 weeks' notice. Check current opening status before travel, as staffing varies. Bring cash—card payment is unreliable. The hut sits on the route to several 3000m peaks and makes a solid overnight base for acclimatization or traverses across the range.
