Refuge de la Cougourde

Refuge de la Cougourde sits at 2,100m on the French side of the Piedmont Alps, near the Col de la Cougourde. Approach from the village of Tende (around 80km south of Turin). The standard route climbs 4–5 hours from the Vallée des Merveilles trailhead, gaining 1,200m through alpine meadow and rocky terrain. The refuge serves as a waypoint for routes into the Mercantour massif and multi-day traverses of the Ligurian Alps.

The refuge holds 40 beds across shared dormitories. Half-board meals feature local Piedmont cooking. Water comes from mountain springs; the hut has pit toilets and no shower. Opening season runs June through September, weather dependent. The guardian lives on-site year-round but the refuge operates on a caretaker basis outside peak season. Expect basic mountain conditions—bring your own towel and toiletries.

Call ahead to confirm opening dates and current conditions. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut prefers direct telephone contact; online booking systems are limited. Arrive with cash (euros preferred); card payments may not work reliably. Winter access requires mountaineering experience and proper equipment; contact the guardian before attempting off-season visits.
