Refuge des Barmettes

Refuge des Barmettes sits at 2,010m in the Cottian Alps, accessible from the Vallone della Barmetta valley. The most direct approach is from Pontechianale (1,800m), a 2–2.5 hour walk following the valley floor and then climbing steeply through larch forest. The hut also connects to routes heading south toward Col della Barmetta and east into the Queyras massif. Summer is the main season; snow blocks access from November through May.

The refuge operates year-round but staffing is limited outside summer months. It sleeps around 30 people in shared dormitories and smaller rooms. Meals are available—half-board and full-board options are standard. The kitchen serves simple mountain food; bring any dietary requirements to their attention when booking. Basic facilities include running water, heating, and chemical toilets. Mobile signal is weak; bring a power bank.

Book at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. Email contact is reliable; they respond within 48 hours. Phone lines can be difficult to reach during busy afternoon hours. July weekends fill quickly. Outside peak season (June, September), booking 2–3 weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Confirm your arrival time when booking, especially if you're arriving late afternoon. The hut is managed independently, not through CAI or rifugi.net.
