About
Refuge du Chambeyron sits at 2,626m on the border between Piedmont and the Hautes-Alpes, in the Ubaye–Gesso massif. Approach from the south via the Pian della Casa trailhead (allow 4–5 hours). From the north, walkers can reach it from Lac d'Allos in 6–7 hours. The hut serves as a hub for traverses across this remote section of the Appennine frontier, with access to the Gran Pico at 2,875m and onward routes toward Rifugio Giacoletti.
The refuge holds 69 beds across shared dormitory rooms. Meals are provided: expect hearty half-board arrangement with dinner and breakfast included. Water comes from a spring nearby; the hut has a gas heater and basic toilets. Opening season runs from June through September, though earlier and later dates depend on snow melt and staffing. The warden lives on site and runs the hut year-round contact by phone.
Book by calling ahead, especially for July and August weekends when the refuge fills with trekkers on the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi) route. Mid-week and shoulder months (June, early September) are quieter. The hut does not accept large groups without advance notice. Bring cash for payment unless you've arranged otherwise by phone.
