About

Rifugio del Saut sits at 2,126m in the Cottian Alps on the border between Piedmont and France. Reach it from Cesana Torinese via the Val Stura valley—allow 3.5 hours uphill through mixed terrain. The approach is straightforward but relentless; most parties gain 900m elevation from the trailhead. It's also accessible from the French side via Abries in about 4 hours, making it useful as a cross-border waypoint.

The rifugio is small. Twenty-five beds fill quickly, split between shared dormitories and a handful of private rooms. Meals are home-cooked and hearty; half-board is standard but the kitchen will prepare packed lunches if you're continuing onward. Water comes from a spring; the hut has no shower. Electricity is minimal—expect no outlets in the dormitories. The season runs mid-June through September; spring and autumn bring unpredictable weather and sometimes only weekend opening.

Book well ahead for July and August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; it's independently managed and not affiliated with CAI or SAT, so advance reservations are crucial. The hut opens at 16:00 and closes at 09:00. Come here for solitude and straightforward mountain hospitality, not comforts. The location makes sense only if you're traversing the range or doing multi-day loops in the upper Stura valley.
