About

Rifugio Alevè sits at 1,580m on the slopes above Macugnaga in the Walser valleys of Piedmont. The hut sits on the Val Anzasca approach to Monte Rosa. Reach it from Macugnaga village (1,327m) in roughly 2 hours on a clear trail heading northeast through mixed forest and pasture. The path is well-marked and steady. You can also approach from the Gressoney valley to the east via longer ridge routes.

The rifugio is a working mountain base with 40 beds across simple rooms. The kitchen serves hearty polenta, pasta, and local cheese. Dinner and breakfast are available daily. Water comes from the mountain spring. There are no showers. The hut operates year-round but sees heaviest use June through September. Winter access depends on snow conditions—confirm before visiting.

Book direct by phone or email. July and August fill quickly—reserve at least 4 weeks ahead. The hut is managed independently and not affiliated with CAI, so check their website or call ahead for current rates and conditions. Macugnaga is reachable by bus from Domodossola. Come for the quiet pasture hiking and close views of Monte Rosa's north face.
