Rifugio Monte Zeus

Piedmont, Italy

About

Rifugio Monte Zeus sits at 2,621m on the Monte Zeus massif in Piedmont's western Alps. Reach it from the Balme valley via the CAI trail from Gias dell'Alpe—allow 3.5 hours for the 7km approach. The hut works as a base for traversing the high ridges between Monte Bles and Monte Rosa's outer peaks, and for day hikes across the alpine meadows that dominate this section of the range. Winter access is limited; most climbers arrive July through September.

The rifugio has 35 beds split across four dormitory rooms. Half and full board only—book meals when you reserve. The kitchen serves simple mountain food: polenta, pasta, stewed meats, local cheese. Showers cost extra. Water is cold and plentiful. The hut runs on bottled gas and a wood stove; generator electricity is limited to evenings. Toilets are outside. Open mid-June to mid-September.

Book directly by phone at least two weeks ahead. July and August fill quickly; aim for 4–6 weeks' notice if you're coming mid-summer. Call to confirm meals and any special dietary needs. The caretaker speaks Italian and limited English. No email booking available, so phone is essential. Payment on arrival by cash or card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead for July-August weekends; weekdays and shoulder season (June, September) are more flexible. Call ahead or check rifugi.net for current availability.
Open July through September with full staffing; winter access is severely limited and not reliable. Check with CAI or the hut directly for exact opening/closing dates.
Start from Gias dell'Alpe in the Balme valley and follow the CAI trail—3.5 hours for the 7km approach to 2,621m. This is a straightforward alpine hike with good trail markings.
35 beds in dormitory rooms, meals provided (half or full board typical), and basic bathroom facilities; confirm shower availability when booking as water can be limited at this elevation.
Suitable for fit hikers with alpine experience; the 3.5-hour approach and 2,621m elevation are manageable, but ridge traverses from the hut require scrambling skills and comfort with exposure. Not ideal for families with young children.
