About

Affentalalm sits at 2,189m in the Zillertal valley on the Austrian side of Trentino-Alto Adige. Reach it from Mayrhofen via the Zillertal cable car and the Penken cable car to 2,095m, then hike 45 minutes across open meadow. The final push is steep but short. From Finkenberg, a longer approach works via Finberbach—2.5 hours uphill through forest and pasture. Both routes converge at the hut. The setting is exposed alpine meadow with views across the Zillertal toward the Zillertaler Alpen.

The hut runs as a simple mountain dairy farm. It offers 20 beds in basic dormitory rooms. Meals are hearty: expect Kaiserschmarrn, local cheese, bread, and coffee. The kitchen uses milk from the farm's own cattle. Toilets are outside. There is no shower. Water comes from the mountain. The hut opens late May through September. It closes entirely in winter. Staff speak German and some English.

Book direct by phone or email ahead of busy weekends. August and July are rammed. Weekday visits in June and September are quieter. Payment is cash only. Ring ahead if arriving late—the hut has no automated check-in. The kitchen stops serving around 17:00, so eat early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends and summer months; weekdays are usually flexible. Contact the hut directly or use rifugio.net and cai.it for availability.
Open June through September, staffed daily during peak season; call ahead in shoulder months (May, early October) as hours vary.
From Mayrhofen: take the Zillertal cable car then Penken cable car to 2,095m, then 45 minutes hiking across meadow with a steep final push. From Finkenberg: 2.5 hours uphill through forest and pasture to the hut.
Expect bed spaces, a restaurant with traditional Tyrolean meals, and basic facilities; hot showers and toilets are standard but confirm specifics when booking.
The cable-car approach is beginner-friendly for the meadow section, though the final steep pitch and exposed 2,189m elevation require fitness; families with hiking experience do well here.
