About

The hut sits at 2,721m in the Zillertal Alps on the border between Trentino and South Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen in Austria (90 minutes by car to the Zemmtal valley trailhead) or from the Italian side via Fondo in the Zillertal. Most hikers approach from the Austrian trailhead: 4.5 hours uphill through Alpine meadows and scree to the hut. The Italian approach from Fondo takes 5 hours and is less crowded.

The hut operates year-round and sleeps 80 across mixed and private rooms. Half-board is standard (dinner and breakfast included with bed). The kitchen serves traditional Austrian and Italian mountain food. You get a shower, heating, and basic laundry facilities. Mobile reception is weak but the hut has a landline and email. It's a working hut, not a tourist cafe—expect serious hikers and climbers. The location makes it an ideal base for crossing into the Zillertal or for day climbs on surrounding peaks above 3,000m.

Book direct by phone well ahead. July and August fill fast—aim for 2–3 months' notice in summer. The SAT (Società degli Alpinisti Trentini) manages the hut. Winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness; check conditions before attempting it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 4-6 weeks ahead for weekends and July-August; weekdays outside peak season need less notice. Call the hut directly or check rifugio.net and cai.it for availability and reservations.
Open year-round with full staffing, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk in the Zemmtal approach.
From Austria: drive to Mayrhofen trailhead in the Zemmtal (90 minutes from there), then hike 4.5 hours uphill through meadows and scree. From Italy: start at Fondo in the Zillertal for a 5-hour approach that's less crowded.
Half-board is standard (dinner and breakfast included); 80 beds in mixed and private rooms. Confirm shower availability when booking, as water at 2,721m can be limited.
The 4.5-hour Austrian approach and 2,721m elevation suit fit hikers with Alpine experience; families with children should consider the gentler Italian route from Fondo.
