Refuge Carè Alto

Rifugio Carè Alto sits at 2,450m in the Val di Non, deep in Trentino's limestone terrain. Reach it from Fondo village (600m approach, 2.5 hours uphill) or from the Passo della Mendola side. Most hikers come via the Fondo route, a steady climb through meadow and forest that opens onto high pasture. The final approach crosses Alpine grassland to the rifugio's exposed position.

The refuge holds 85 beds split across several rooms. Half-board is mandatory in season—expect hearty Trentino cooking and local Val di Non apples. Showers and toilets are functional; water comes from mountain springs. The rifugio opens year-round but services and staffing drop significantly November to March. Summer crowds are real from mid-July through August. The location makes it a natural basecamp for high-level hiking toward the surrounding peaks and onward into the Dolomites.

Book directly by phone or email at least two weeks ahead during July and August, longer if you need a private room. July is the busiest month. Outside summer, a single call a few days before usually secures a bed. The hut sits on the Sentiero Italia long-distance trail, so through-hikers arrive constantly during good weather. Email confirmation is essential given the hut's remoteness.
