Rifugio Malga Cavallera

Rifugio Malga Cavallera sits at 1,880m in the Pale di San Martino massif, eastern Dolomites. Reach it from San Martino di Castrozza via the Fedare valley trail—allow 2.5 hours for the 6km ascent. The hut marks the junction between multiple ridge routes and serves as a base for scrambling on Cima di Val Grande and traversing toward Rifugio Viel del Pan. Summer hikers also use it as a waypoint on longer Dolomite routes linking the Trentino valleys.
The rifugio operates year-round and sleeps 50 people in mixed dorms and private rooms. Meals are standard mountain fare: pasta, polenta, schnitzel. The kitchen stocks beer and basic spirits. Showers are available. WiFi signal is weak but present. Water comes from the spring behind the building. The hut sits on working pasture land, so expect cowbells and occasional herds moving through in June and September.
Book directly by phone or email at least 3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. They take walk-ins outside peak season if beds are available. The hut fills quickly on Friday and Saturday during summer. Winter access depends on snow conditions—call ahead before attempting a winter visit. The nearest road head is San Martino, 6km downvalley; no shuttle service runs.
