Refuge Stella Alpina

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
About
Rifugio Stella Alpina sits at 2,497m in the Zillertal Alps, on the border between Trentino and South Tyrol. Reach it from the Zillertal valley via the Stillup Valley. Most hikers start from Mayrhofen (Austria side) or from Finkenberg. The route takes 4–5 hours of steady climbing through larch forest and alpine meadow. In summer, a cable car reduces approach time significantly. Winter access is unreliable; check conditions before attempting the hut in autumn and spring.
The rifugio operates year-round and sleeps around 30 people in mixed and private rooms. Meals are substantial—expect full dinners and hearty breakfasts. Tap water is excellent. The hut has a common room with a wood stove, and a small terrace with views north toward the Zillertal. Showers are available. Mobile signal is poor; bring a paper map. Staff speak German, Italian, and basic English.
Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; it's independently run and not affiliated with CAI, SAT, or AVS. Expect to pay around €50–70 per person per night including dinner and breakfast. The hut is quiet from October through April, making it ideal for winter mountaineers and spring ski tourers planning routes into the High Zillertal. Arrive by 16:00 if you've booked dinner.

From Mayrhofen or Finkenberg in Austria, hike 4–5 hours via Stillup Valley through larch forest and alpine meadow to 2,497m. In summer, a cable car cuts approach time significantly—use it if you want to save legs for further routes.
Expect traditional hut meals (dinner and breakfast included with bed), simple but adequate. Shower facilities are basic; bring a headlamp and confirm hot water availability when you book.
The 4–5 hour approach is moderate but sustained—not ideal for very young children unless you use the cable car. It's a solid option for families and fit beginners accustomed to all-day hiking in mountains.
