Rifugio Val Amola-Giovanni Segantini

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

About

Rifugio Val Amola sits at 2,558m in the Adamello-Presanella massif, accessed from the Val Camonica in Lombardy or Val Rendena in Trentino. From Spiazzi di Nadro (1,385m), the hiking trail climbs 3.5 hours to the hut, traversing steep meadows and rocky terrain. The route is exposed above 2,000m and scrambling skills help. Most parties approach from the Trentino side via Val Rendena, which adds 4 hours but offers a more gradual ascent from lower valleys.

The hut holds 50 beds across mixed dormitories and a few doubles. Meals are hearty: expect polenta, mountain cheeses, and pasta at dinner, with packed lunches available. The hut has no shower but offers washbasins with cold water; toilets are basic. Water comes from a natural spring. Opening is June through September, weather dependent. The hut is managed by CAI Brescia and sits on the Adamello ridge traverse, a three-day high-altitude crossing popular in July and August.

Book from March onwards for summer weekends via the CAI Brescia section website or by phone. July and August weekends fill by April. The hut is unguarded outside season. Mobile coverage is unreliable. Bring a headtorch and be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms—the ridge is exposed and descents should be completed by early afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead during peak season (July–August); call directly as this is a small 50-bed hut that fills quickly, especially weekends.
Staffed during summer months (typically June–September), though exact dates vary—call ahead to confirm before planning your trip.
From Val Rendena (Trentino side) takes 4 hours on a more gradual route, or 3.5 hours from Spiazzi di Nadro (Lombardy side) via steep terrain and scrambling; most hikers prefer the Trentino approach.
50 beds in mixed dormitories with meals provided; basic facilities typical of mountain rifugios, though confirm shower availability when booking.
Not ideal for beginners—the Trentino route requires 4 hours of sustained hiking at altitude, and the Lombardy approach involves exposed scrambling above 2,000m; better suited to experienced hill walkers and mountaineers.
