Schutzhütte

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
About
Schutzhütte sits at 2,284m in the Zillertal Alps on the border between Trentino and Alto Adige. Reach it from Fondo (650m) via the Ziller valley trail—allow 5–6 hours for the 1,630m climb. The approach is steady and well-marked but gains serious elevation quickly. You can break the ascent by staying at Greifenburg Hütte (1,922m) on the way up. Most parties start from the valley floor in one push.
The hut serves as a base for peaks on the Zillertal divide, including Hochfeiler (3,510m) and Zillertaler Wildspitze (3,457m). It's a solid mountaineering hut with simple, functional facilities. The hut runs 30 beds in mixed dormitories and serves hearty dinners and packed lunches. Water is piped from the glacier. The hut opens mid-June through September; snow blocks access before late spring.
Book directly with the hut keeper from April onwards. July and August fill 6–8 weeks in advance. Phone ahead to confirm opening dates, as snow melt varies year to year. The hut is managed independently, not by a major Alpine club, so online booking systems may not list it. Reach out in writing or by phone as soon as your dates are fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Book 2–3 weeks ahead by phone during summer season; contact details are on rifugio.it or cai.it. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially if you're planning a multi-day mountaineering trip.
Staffed June through September; exact dates vary by year. Check rifugio.it before planning, as early season and late autumn depend on snow conditions and staffing.
Start from Fondo (650m) in the Zillertal and follow the marked trail for 5–6 hours, gaining 1,630m elevation. The route is well-marked but relentless; many parties break the ascent by stopping at Greifenburg Hütte (1,922m).
Expect dorm beds, hot meals at dinner, and breakfast; shower facilities are basic (cold water or heated depending on season). Bring earplugs and accept communal living—this is a working mountaineers' hut, not a hotel.
Not ideal for beginners—the 1,630m ascent on day one is serious business. Better suited to fit hikers and mountaineers using it as a base for Hochfeiler (3,510m) and other peaks on the Zillertal divide.
