About

Utia de Puez sits at 2,475m in the Puez massif, above Val Gardena in the Dolomites. You reach it in 2.5 hours from Colfosco (1,645m) on a steady, well-marked path through larch forest and alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and suits families with basic fitness. In descent, allow 2 hours back to the valley.

The hut holds 94 beds across multiple rooms. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner daily during the summer season (staffing runs roughly June through September). Drinking water is available. There is no WiFi—plan accordingly if you need connectivity. The building itself dates to 1982, replacing the original 1889 hut that stood nearby. Rooms are simple but adequate for a mountain refuge. The terrace offers views toward the Puez peaks and Sella massif.

Book directly by email or phone through rifugi.cai.it (the CAI Bolzano section manages the hut). July and August require booking 4–6 weeks ahead; June and September have more flexibility. Summer weekends fill quickly. The hut operates on a first-come basis for walk-ups only outside peak season, but email confirmation is still wise. Pay in cash or by bank transfer when you reserve.
