Velo della Madonna
2,333m
Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
About
Velo della Madonna sits at 2,333m in the Val Cismon, deep in the Pale di San Martino massif. The hut is a staging point for ascents and traverses across this dramatic limestone plateau. Access takes 3–4 hours on foot from the valley; most parties approach via trails from Passo Rolle or from rifugi Fedare. The CAI-managed hut opened in 1980 and remains the best-positioned base for climbing and ski touring in the range.
The hut has 78 beds split across multiple rooms, plus 10 emergency places. Meals are served daily in season. Water is reliable from springs above the hut. Hot showers are available—a real advantage at this altitude. There is no WiFi. The hut is staffed and fully operational from June to September. From October through May, the doors stay open for self-catering winter mountaineers, but heating, water, and provisions are your responsibility.
Book directly by email or phone well ahead for July and August; 6–8 weeks is standard. The rifugi.cai.it portal lists contact details and availability. The hut fills fast during school holidays and good-weather weekends. Off-season visits require self-sufficiency; check conditions and confirm the door is unlocked before you head up.
