Cabane de la FMG

Valle d'Aosta, Italy
About
Cabane de la FMG sits at 2,550m in the Gran Paradiso massif, above the Valsavarenche valley in Valle d'Aosta. Approach from Pont in 4–5 hours via the Prati Rossi path, or from Degioz in 3–4 hours. The hut lies on the main route to Gran Paradiso's summit (4,061m) and connects well with trails into the Lauson Valley. Snow blocks the access until mid-June most years.
The hut sleeps around 60 guests in mixed dormitory rooms and has hot showers. Meals are simple and substantial—dinner is fixed menu, breakfast buffet. Cooking fuel is wood and gas; they serve basic packed lunches if ordered ahead. Open mid-June through September, weather dependent. The hut operates as a CAI refuge and accepts day visitors, though space for overnighters is limited in July and August.
Book directly by email or phone at least 8–10 weeks ahead for July and August. June and September fill steadily but rarely fully. Weekdays are quieter than weekends even in peak season. The hut is managed by volunteers, so call or email during daylight hours (morning is best). Confirm your arrival date and expected time when you book; they need this for meal planning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for July–August weekends, earlier if climbing Gran Paradiso. Contact the hut directly by phone (listed above) or check rifugio.net and cai.it for availability.
Open mid-June through September; snow typically blocks access before mid-June. The hut is staffed daily during the season.
From Pont, 4–5 hours via the Prati Rossi path; from Degioz, 3–4 hours. Both routes are well-marked; the hut sits at 2,550m on the main Gran Paradiso approach.
Sleeps 60 in mixed dorms, hot showers available, and fixed-menu dinners with simple, substantial food.
Better for experienced hikers: the 4–5 hour approach and 2,550m altitude require fitness, and it's primarily a mountaineering base for Gran Paradiso summit attempts rather than a casual family stop.
