Le Criouly

Le Criouly sits at 2,154m in the Gran Paradiso area of Valle d'Aosta. Reach it from Pont (1,960m) via the Ala valley trail—2.5 hours on a clear path with moderate elevation gain. The hut marks the start of routes toward Gran Paradiso and Mont Emilius. In summer, you can approach from Cogne as well, though the Pont approach is more direct.

The rifugio offers 30 beds in simple rooms, with half and full board available. Expect basic but clean accommodation. The kitchen serves mountain fare—expect pasta, polenta, and meat dishes tied to local stock. Open June through September. Water comes from the stream; showers are cold. The hut operates as a staging point rather than a destination in itself, which suits trekkers doing multi-day loops through the park.

Book 2-3 months ahead for July and August. Contact the hut direct by phone or email—it's independently managed, not part of a major club system. June and September are quieter and offer better conditions for securing a bed last-minute. Bring cash for payment; card facilities are unreliable at this elevation. Stock up on supplies at Pont before arriving, as the rifugio has limited stocks and higher prices than valley shops.
