About
Rifugio Sales sits at 2,020m in the Gran Paradiso valley, on the main hiking route between Pont and Lillaz. Most hikers reach it in 2.5 hours from Pont, following the Gressoney trail upstream through larch forest and alpine meadow. The final stretch climbs steeply to the hut's terrace, which overlooks the valley floor 400m below. You can also approach from Lillaz in 3 hours via a longer, gentler route that traverses the eastern slope.
The refuge sleeps 40 people in simple rooms. Half-board is mandatory in summer; you get a hot dinner, breakfast, and packed lunch. The kitchen serves solid mountain food—thick soups, polenta, local cheese. Water comes from a mountain spring. The hut has no shower, just washbasins. It opens mid-June through September, depending on snow melt. The CAI manages it.
Book directly through the hut by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. July weekends fill completely. June and September are quieter. The hut prefers groups to call ahead; solo hikers can often find space with less notice. There is no mobile signal—bring a paper map and be prepared to navigate in poor visibility.
