Refuge Vallot

Valle d'Aosta, Italy
About
Vallot sits at 4,322m on Mont Blanc's north face, accessible only by mountaineers with glacier experience. Approach from Goûter hut (3,817m) takes 2–3 hours across the Grand Plateau. Winter ascents from Trois-Monts are technical and require crampon skills. This is a mountaineering hut, not a hiking destination. The route crosses crevassed terrain and exposed sections where falling rock is common. Do not attempt this approach in bad weather or without a guide.
The refuge sleeps 12 in spartan conditions. Expect a metal box with bunks, no running water, and a wood stove for heating. The guardian provides basic meals when staffed. Altitude sickness symptoms are normal here. Oxygen levels are 40% of sea-level values. Most climbers sleep poorly and should arrive acclimatized from lower camps. Toilet facilities are basic; pack out all waste. The hut is often overcrowded in July and August when Mont Blanc traffic is heaviest.
Open June to September, depending on snow conditions and staffing. Book through the French Alpine Club (CAF—Chamonix section) or contact the guardian directly via radio or satellite phone before attempting the route. Solo ascents are not recommended. Hire a mountain guide through Chamonix's guide office if you lack experience on Mont Blanc. Expect to pay a shelter fee whether you sleep at the hut or use it as a dayroom.

From Goûter hut (3,817m), allow 2–3 hours crossing the crevassed Grand Plateau on Mont Blanc's north face; winter approaches from Trois-Monts are technical. This is glacier mountaineering terrain—do not attempt without crampon skills, good conditions, and ideally a guide.
Spartan accommodation with 12 beds, basic meals provided, no shower facilities. It's a working mountaineering refuge, not a comfort destination.
No—this is exclusively for mountaineers with glacier experience and rope skills. Families and hikers should use lower huts like Goûter (3,817m) or Tête Rousse (3,167m) instead.
