About

Rifugio Barma sits at 2,060m in the Valpelline valley, deep in Valle d'Aosta's western ranges. Reach it from Bionaz village (1,570m) via a well-marked mule track—allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the 4.5km approach. The route climbs steadily through larch forest and alpine pasture. In winter, snow often blocks access before December.

The rifugio is a small, traditional stone hut operated by the local CAI section. It sleeps 40 across dormitory rooms and can feed 60 at mealtimes. Meals are basic but solid: expect polenta, soups, and local cheeses. The hut has running water and outside toilets. There's no heating except in the dining room, so bring warm layers even in July. The season runs mid-June through September, though opening dates depend on snow melt.

Book directly with the rifugio by phone or email—contact details are on cai.it. July and August weekends fill fast; aim to reserve at least 2 weeks ahead. Midweek in June or September is quieter. This is a working base for hikers tackling the Gran Paradiso massif and the high passes of the Valpelline circuit, not a destination hut for rest days.

Dormitory beds for 40 guests, basic but solid meals for 60, and standard Alpine hut amenities; no private rooms or showers, so expect communal bathrooms.
Yes for fit families and beginners—the mule track is well-marked and not technical, though the 3-hour climb and basic facilities mean kids should be comfortable with hiking and shared dorm rooms.
