Refuge Città di Chivasso

Rifugio Città di Chivasso sits at 2,603m on the Gran Paradiso massif in Valle d'Aosta. The hut serves as a base for approaches to Gran Paradiso (4,061m) and access to high alpine terrain. Most climbers approach via the Valnontey valley starting from Cogne (1,534m). The walk takes 4–5 hours depending on route and fitness. Winter access is severely limited; confirm conditions before attempting a winter approach.

The refuge holds 38 beds in mixed dormitory rooms. Meals are available for residents and day visitors. Facilities include running water and basic toileting. The hut opens typically from mid-June through September, though exact dates depend on snow conditions and staffing. Phone ahead to confirm opening dates. This is a working base hut, not a luxury destination—expect simple, clean accommodation and fuel-efficient cooking.

Book directly by phone with the managing CAI section, Club Alpino Italiano Sezione Chivasso. Reserve at least 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August. Call several days before arrival to confirm the hut is staffed and open, especially during shoulder seasons. The hut fills quickly when Gran Paradiso conditions are good.
