About

Rifugio Giovanni Bobba sits at 2,770m in the Gran Paradiso massif, deep in Valle d'Aosta. Reach it from Pont in 4 hours via the Grauson valley, a steady climb through alpine meadows and scree. The hut is the main staging point for Gran Paradiso (4,061m) ascents and sits on the park's core walking routes. Most climbers arrive the afternoon before their summit attempt, which starts around 3am.

The refuge holds 60 beds across mixed dorms and a few small private rooms. Half-board (bed, dinner, breakfast) is standard. The kitchen provides solid mountain fare—expect pasta, stew, and strong coffee. Facilities are basic: no shower, squat toilets, and water from the spring outside. The hut operates June to September, with July and August peak season. Winter closing is firm. The CAI (Italian Alpine Club) manages the hut.

Book direct through the hut's phone line at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August. Peak season fills quickly, especially Thursday to Sunday. May and early June are quieter but snow patches linger above 3,000m. Email is slower—phone is faster. Confirm your arrival time when booking. The hut sits on mule-track terrain; pack accordingly.
