Refuge Jutz

Valle d'Aosta, Italy
About
Rifugio Jutz sits at 2,284m in the Val d'Ayas, a side valley of the Valle d'Aosta. Drive to Champoluc and park at Crest, then hike 2 hours north to the hut. The trail follows the valley floor before climbing through larch forest. You can also approach from Gressoney-Saint-Jean to the east in 3.5 hours via the Col di Nana (2,596m), a good option if you're coming from that side. The hut marks the start of several classic walks: Mont Rosa circuits, the Gran Balconata ridge trail, and descent options to Gressoney or back to Champoluc.
The hut has 50 beds spread across simple rooms. Meals are served at set times; half-board is standard, and you need to notify them of dietary requirements ahead of time. Water comes from mountain springs. The bar stays open outside meal hours. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is reduced in early season and November–December. It's managed by CAI, so standards are reliable.
Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Email directly or book via rifugio.net. The hut fills fastest on weekends during the Jutz-Mombarone trail season (July–September). Winter visits require advance notice. Expect the hut to be quiet and peaceful outside summer school holidays.
