About

Rifugio Letey-Champillon sits at 2,465m in the Gran Paradiso massif, on the border between Valle d'Aosta and Piedmont. Reach it from the village of Ceresole Reale (1,612m) in about 3.5 hours. The approach follows the Orco valley, crossing steep alpine meadows and rocky terrain. Most hikers use this hut as a base for ascents of Gran Paradiso (4,061m) or as a waypoint on multi-day traverses. Winter access is unreliable; check conditions before visiting November through May.

The rifugio has 32 beds in small dorms and a few doubles. Meals are traditional Valle d'Aosta cuisine—hearty polenta, local cheese, and game when in season. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast. Water comes from a nearby spring. Solar panels and a small generator provide electricity. The hut is open June through September. Showers are cold water only. A small common room has a wood stove for evening gatherings. Staff speak Italian and basic English.

Book directly by email as far ahead as possible. July and August fill quickly—aim for 2–3 months advance notice. The hut is unmanaged outside the summer season. Check the website or call ahead to confirm opening dates, especially in early June and late September when conditions change rapidly. Payment in cash is preferred but card payments may be possible; confirm when booking.
