Casera La Varetta

Casera La Varetta sits at 1,709m in the Carnic Alps, accessible via the Pesarina Valley approach from Sutrio. The hut marks a natural waypoint on routes crossing toward Sella Nevea and the Julian Alps. Reach it in 2.5 hours from Sutrio village, following well-marked trails through beech forest and alpine meadow. The terrain is steady rather than steep, making it suitable for acclimatization days or as a base for day ascents in the surrounding massif.

The hut operates as a rifugio with around 40 beds split between dormitories and small private rooms. Meals focus on local mountain fare—expect hearty soups, polenta, and game when available. Water comes from reliable springs. The building has basic heating but no shower facilities. Opening runs from June through September, with July and August seeing regular weekend traffic. Winter access is possible only for experienced ski mountaineers with appropriate gear.

Book directly by phone or email at least two weeks ahead during July and August. The hut fills quickly on Saturdays and holiday weekends. June and September offer quieter conditions and easier access, though mountain weather becomes more unpredictable. The keeper can provide beta on current trail conditions and snow patches if you're planning traverses into the higher peaks nearby.
