Rifugio Passo Duran "C.Tomè"

Rifugio Passo Duran sits at 2,320m on the Passo Duran between Val Maira and Val Varaita in the Cottian Alps. Reach it from Prazzo in Val Maira via a 2-hour hiking trail that climbs steadily through larch forest and alpine meadow. The approach is well-marked and moderate in gradient. From the Varaita side, the hike takes roughly 2.5 hours from Pontechianale. Both approaches suit day-walkers and multi-day trekkers on the wider Marittime Alps circuits.

The rifugio sleeps 25 people in mixed dormitory rooms. The kitchen serves full meals including dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches—book your meals when you reserve. Hot showers work, though water is limited on busy periods. There's no WiFi, so plan accordingly. The hut operates year-round but check conditions before winter visits; the pass can be snowy and the hut is small, making it tight in bad weather.

Book directly by email or phone at least 2 weeks ahead, longer if you're coming in July or August. Summer weekends fill fast. The hut is popular with trekkers on multi-day loops through the Cottian Alps, so aim for weekdays if you have flexibility. Winter access requires avalanche awareness and proper equipment.
