Schutzhaus Hochgang - Rifugio Casa del Valico

Schutzhaus Hochgang sits at 1839m on the Hochgang Pass between the Brenta Dolomites and the Paneveggio plateau. Most hikers reach it in 3–4 hours from Molveno, climbing north through mixed forest and pasture. The route is steady and well-marked. From the north, the approach from Caoria takes roughly the same time. The hut's position makes it a natural basecamp for day walks into the surrounding limestone peaks.

The rifugio holds 40 beds split across simple rooms. Meals are hearty: dinners feature pasta and local meat, breakfasts are standard Italian. The kitchen serves packed lunches. The hut runs May through October, closing in winter. Water comes from a spring; solar panels and a backup generator provide power. The small bar operates during opening hours. Bathrooms are basic but functional. Most guests are hikers doing multi-day traverses of the Dolomites or resting between summits.

Book direct by email or phone at least two weeks ahead for weekends. July and August are busy; mid-June and September offer better availability. The hut accepts cash and card. Arrival after 18:00 requires advance notice. Staff speak Italian and German; English is limited. The nearest grocery is in Molveno, 1 hour down the hill.
