Bertahütte

Bertahütte sits at 1527m in the Julian Alps, on the Austrian side of the Karavanke range. The hut is reached via the Podkoren Valley from Kranjska Gora—allow 2 to 2.5 hours on foot from the village. The approach follows a well-marked trail through beech and spruce forest with steady elevation gain. Winter access is possible but requires mountain experience and avalanche awareness.
The hut is run by OeAV Sektion Villach and holds 34 beds across multiple rooms. Meals are served daily during opening season; half-board packages are standard and half-portions are available for lighter appetites. The hut has a basic kitchen setup for self-caterers, a common room with stove heating, and an outdoor terrace. Water comes from a spring. The toilet is outside. Opening dates vary by season—contact the hut directly to confirm winter availability, as staffing is seasonal.

The hut suits hikers doing east-west traverses across the Karavanke as well as those based for day walks into the surrounding peaks.
