Malga Priu

Malga Priu sits at 1,257m in the Julian Alps near the Slovenian-Italian border. Reach it from the Krn region by hiking up through beech and spruce forest in approximately 2.5 hours. The route is well-marked and moderately steep, gaining roughly 400m of elevation. The hut is also accessible from Bovec via the Kanin plateau, though this is a longer and more exposed approach suitable for experienced hikers. Most parties approach from the Slovenian side.
The hut is a working mountain pasture (malga) with basic overnight accommodation and meals. Expect simple but adequate rooms with 20–30 beds split across several areas. The kitchen serves traditional Slovenian and Italian mountain food, often using local dairy products. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut operates year-round but conditions in winter are harsh and access may be blocked by snow; confirm status before visiting. There is no electricity grid connection; lighting runs on generators or gas lamps.

Summer weekends fill quickly, especially in July and August; book at least 4 weeks ahead. Malga Priu is best visited June through September. Bring cash in euros—card facilities are unreliable. The hut sits on the border; confirm passport requirements before you go.
