Prešernova Hut na Stolu

Prešernova Hut sits on Stol (2,236m) in the northern Julian Alps, a commanding position above the Kranjska Gora valley. Reach it from Kranjska Gora in 2–2.5 hours via marked trails through forest and alpine meadow. The route gains 1,100m steadily but without technical difficulty. The hut also connects to the broader Julian Alps traverse network—Bivac Aljažev Dom is 2–3 hours south, and Triglavski Dom lies within a long day's travel. The location works well as a base for ridge walking toward Stol's summit or as a waypoint on multi-day routes.
The hut has capacity for around 60 people in dormitory rooms. It serves hot meals (request dinner in advance) and offers basic facilities: running water, heating, and no-frills alpine accommodation. The guardian typically opens from June through September, though conditions determine exact dates—check ahead if planning shoulder-season visits. Cell reception is poor; plan communications before arrival.
Book through PZS (Planinska zveza Slovenije) or contact the hut directly. July and August fill rapidly; reserve 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends. May and September are quieter. Bring cash—card payments are unreliable at this elevation. The hut sits exposed to weather; arrive with daylight and check forecasts, particularly if crossing to other huts in changeable conditions.
