Planšarija Dolga Njiva

Planšarija Dolga Njiva sits at 1,400m on the slopes of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, a working alpine pasture that doubles as a mountain hut. Reach it from the village of Kamnik by hiking 2–2.5 hours uphill through beech and spruce forest. The route is well-marked and gains roughly 700m elevation steadily but without severe pitches. This is a base for exploring the Kamnik-Savinja range, with direct access to ridge walks and scrambles across the massif.
The hut operates as a simple seasonal refuge run by local herders. Expect 10–15 beds in basic dormitory rooms. Meals focus on traditional Slovenian mountain food—hearty soups, cheese, bread, and whatever the season offers. The facilities are modest: no shower, cold running water, pit toilet. PZS members receive discounts on overnight rates. The hut typically opens May through October, depending on weather and herding schedules. Phone ahead to confirm opening dates and availability.
Book by calling directly rather than online. The hut fills quickly in July and August; contact them 4–6 weeks before your planned visit for summer weekends. Outside July–August, booking 1–2 weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Bring cash (EUR)—card payments are unreliable. This is not a comfortable hut, but it's authentic and the views toward the Julian Alps make the basic conditions worthwhile.
