Stoss

Stoss sits at 1514m on the eastern flank of the Säntis massif in northeastern Switzerland, straddling the Appenzell Alps rather than the main Bernese Oberland. The hut is reached from Säntis village (20 minutes by car from Appenzell) via a forest trail that takes 1.5 to 2 hours on foot. Summer hikers typically approach from the Säntis cable car (2502m), descending 45 minutes to the hut. Winter access requires checking conditions; the hut sits on a well-used but exposed ridge section.
The hut offers 60 beds across multiple dormitories and a handful of double rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain fare—expect fondue, rösti, and regional dairy dishes. The kitchen can accommodate special diets with advance notice. The hut operates year-round but runs skeleton staff in November and March. A drying room helps manage wet gear after autumn and spring trips. A small shop stocks basics and emergency supplies.
